- Preheat oven to 350°F. Cut a thin slice from the bottom and top of each onion. Remove onion skins. Core onions, cutting almost to, but not through, the bottoms, leaving 1-inch shells.
- Fold 4 (24x18-inch) sheets of heavy-duty foil in half, making 4 (12x18-inch) sheets. Place 1 onion, cored side up, in the center of each sheet. Dot with butter; sprinkle with bouillon granules. Bring up the opposite edges of foil and seal with a double fold. Fold the side edges together to completely enclose filling, leaving room for expansion.
- Place foil packets on a baking sheet, and place baking sheet in oven. Bake 35 minutes or until onions are tender. Carefully open packets; sprinkle with cheese, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Close packets loosely. Bake 5 minutes more or until cheese melts. Serve warm.
