Ingredients

  • 1 lb. bulk sausage
  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine
  • 8 oz. mushrooms, coarsely chopped
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, sliced
  • 1 large apple (such as Braeburn or Gala), peeled, cored and diced
  • 2 cups crushed herbed stuffing mix
  • 2 cups onion-sage crouton stuffing mix
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
  • 1 1/3 cups chicken broth, heated
  • 1 egg, beaten

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F. Lightly grease a shallow 2-quart baking dish; set aside. Cook sausage in a large skillet over medium heat; transfer sausage to a very large bowl; set aside.
  2. Melt butter in same skillet. Add mushrooms, onion and celery; cook 4 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add apple; cook, stirring constantly, 2 minutes. Add mushroom mixture to sausage. Add stuffing mixes and (if desired) walnuts to bowl; toss. Add broth and egg; toss well.
  3. Spoon into baking dish. Bake, covered, 20 minutes. Remove cover; bake 25 to 30 minutes more or until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the center registers 165°F.
