Chateau Grand Traverse
Sean O’Keefe is a second-generation winemaker producing specialty white wines at his family’s estate on Northern Michigan’s Old Mission Peninsula. Riesling has always been his idée fixe and he has worked actively to promote it as the world’s preeminent cool-climate white wine variety.
His formal wine training began in Germany where he apprenticed at Weingut Jakob Pfleger in the Pfalz and then continued his academic studies at the renowned wine school in Geisenheim. His time there was very influential, where he befriended a group of winemakers who have been on the leading edge of the resurgence of high-quality German Riesling. After Geisenheim, he worked as an importer of Austrian and Northern Italian wines for several years before returning to his family’s estate as specialty winemaker and vineyard manager. Since then Sean has actively worked over the last decade to produce and promote drier, more delicate and balanced styles of Riesling best suited to the unique growing conditions of Northern Michigan’s Old Mission Peninsula.
Sean has been selected to serve as an expert panelist at the upcoming Riesling Rendezvous being held in the state of Washington. Hosted by Dr. Ernst Loosen of the highly acclaimed German Riesling estate, this event will bring together some of the world's leading Riesling experts and producers to explore the versatility of Rieslings.
