Revolution Farms

Revolution Farms, based just south of Grand Rapids in Caledonia, Mich., grows sustainable lettuce and salad greens for our stores year-round in an indoor greenhouse, using hydroponics, which is the process of growing plants in water, without soil.

This process uses 90% less water, 90% less land, and 95% fewer food miles than traditional farming, as the lettuce comes to us from right down the road instead of California or Arizona. This means the salad greens they grow are delivered to your table in 1-2 days instead of 1-2 weeks. Fresher produce is proven to have more nutrients, so this lettuce is not only fresh, local and non-GMO, but also nutrient dense, meaning more vitamins and minerals in each bite.

The team at Revolution Farms is committed to our Grand Rapids neighbors and communities across the state of Michigan, who want to see local food on our tables, as we know you do, as well. They work hard to have as little waste as possible from the farm, and donate all unusable parts of the plants or discolored leaves to a local farmer, who feeds them to his cattle and pigs! In addition, Revolution Farms has also pledged to donate at least one percent of all the lettuce they produce to Feeding America West Michigan, to help feed our neighbors who need it.

The farm’s locally grown lettuce eliminates more than six days and 2,000 miles of food shipping, and their closed loop process allows the lettuce to be packaged right after being picked, without leaving the building. This increases transparency in the food supply system as well as increasing safety.

Currently, the farm provides us with four types of lettuce and salad mixes, but they have big plans to increase those numbers soon and are excited to experiment with new varieties of greens like spinach, chard, kale and more!
