June is Dairy Month! Originally started in 1937 as National Milk Month to promote drinking milk, but now yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese and other dairy products provide nutrient-rich health benefits. Dairy products contain calcium, potassium, nine essential nutrients, vitamin A, and protein. Consuming these foods can help with weight management, reducing risk of high blood pressure, osteoporosis and certain cancers, repairing muscle tissue and maintaining healthy skin. Adults and children 9+ should get 3 cups of dairy per day. In general, 1 cup of milk, yogurt or soymilk, 1 1/2 ounces of natural cheese, or 2 ounces of processed cheese can count as 1 cup from the Dairy Group.
We visited SwissLane Dairy Farm in Alto, one of West Michigan's finest dairy farms, to learn more about the process of producing milk. With classical music played over loudspeakers, automatic milking machines and plenty of space to hang out, these SwissLane Cows are happy Cows, which means good milk and dairy products.
